An integrated program of course in Universal Ethics (the Noahide laws)

Courses running September-December 2008

  • 1. The theory of universal ethics (the world view of the Noahide laws)
The theory or world-view of universal ethics has been assembled by the Institute in a work entitled Perspectives on the Noahide laws - Universal ethics. In it, the Noahide laws are grasped in their social dimension, in terms of their concept of person - including an aspect of conscience or soul - which they teach; the notion of reason and rationality which they embody; the way in which they relate to the psychological - the personal and interpersonal - dimensions of human life; how the Noahide laws functionally relate to the order of society; and how they relate to the State and international relations.
  • 2. The philosophical and theological foundations of universal ethics
This course has two parts. First, it examines the relationship of the philosophy and theology underlying the Noahide laws and relates it to key terms and concerns of the Western philosophical tradition. How, in other words, does the relationship of G-d as creator, and the human being as a "partner" in the creation, relate to traditional philosophical terms. The second part of the course is concerned with the classical theological issues relating to the existence and knowledge of G-d, Divine law or revelation, and notions of Providence and Redemption

    Courses running February-May 2009
