Torah Studies

The Institute's focus in Torah studies has been to contribute materials of a Torah nature which can be integrated into the syllabus of studies taught in schools.

The Institute has so far pioneered the introduction of a Matriculation (VCE) subject, "Classical Hebrew" into Victorian Schools.

To this end, it produced two resource works, (1) a translation of a classical text on the spiritual structure of the morning prayers [see The focus of prayer (Iyun Tefila) by Rabbi Dovber of Lubavitch published in Volume 6 of the Journal of Judaism and Civilization (see publications page)] and a translation of a work on the structure of the Torah tradition [see "The halachic tradition from the Geonim to the Shulchan Aruch and its commentaries: a schematic overview" by Rabbi Yosef Chazan published in Volume 7 of the Journal of Judaism and Civilization (see publications page)].

It is also interested in introducing Torah content into the Victorian matriculation subject "Philosophy" and to this end has just published "Torah and philosophy" by Rabbi Dr Shimon Cowen in Volume 8 of the Journal of Judaism and Civilization (see publications page)
